about

“Play of Light” is a kaleidoscopic meditation in which rays of light appear as a symbol of discovery, escape and, in the end, absence. Blending concrete story-telling and surrealist, apocalyptic imagery, the song places an individual’s cycle of love and loss within broader natural cycles of growth and decay. “Play of Light” was originally composed and written by Mervine for vocalist Petia Zamfirova and West Philadelphia Orchestra, the Balkan-inspired brass band Mervine founded. And so it’s no surprise that the song dances over a modified version of a Bulgarian dance rhythm, a rachenitsa. WPO’s version of “Play of Light'' will come out later this year, but his indie folk version will come out first on Wednesday, February 8th. Mervine plays every instrument on the recording except trumpet, which is played by Daniel Stern.

“Play of Light” is the second single from g. mervine’s upcoming album Visible Seams.

lyrics

I breathed the promise of the morning
Tucked and warm beside you in your bed
Through frosted window panes came shining
Beams of light that felt like hope
That in your arms I had found a home...

Now comes the silence, it is nearing
Left my pail of milk out in the snow
Remembering the words they cried,
As the ice rose with the tide

Too afraid to ask, “how are you feeling?”
Cross our breakfast table to the void
Intrigued by acts of disappearing
I’m studying the sunbeams
They are highways to wherever I will go

Now come the silence, it is nearing...

All my things stuffed inside of boxes
Stacked up to the roof can’t see behind
And so farewell to your tomorrows
That were once so bright with hope
Makes it so hard to let go but I will go

Now comes the silence, it is nearing…
